Hard Water Stains
Hard water stains are caused by the minerals that are found in our normal drinking and irrigation water. If the water sits on the glass for any length of time, it starts a kind of chemical reaction with the surface of the glass. One miss-aligned sprinkler that hits a window regularly can ruin it in a mater of a few months.
Not all home or commercial windows can be saved. However, most can, if the hard water staining process is stopped in time. To repair your windows, I use special chemicals and equipment to remove the stains from your glass. Then I’ll apply a protectant to help seal the window from further damage. Depending on the conditions in your area, the protectant can last up to six months. However, to insure success, you will need to make repairs to your sprinklers to insure that the window stays dry.
I recommend having your windows cleaned and inspected regularly to prevent these stains from becoming permanent. When hard water stains damage is found and repaired in time, it can save you a lot of money in window replacement costs. Replacing a window that has permanent hard water stains on it could cost you up to $500 or more. On the other hand, I usually charge between $10 to $30 per pain of glass to remove these stains.
Of course, the most important part of the repair process is making sure your irrigation or pool water doesn’t hit the window anymore. If it does, then these stains may come back, even with a protectant applied to the glass.
